Working in Orlando
Sep. 27th, 2006 12:53 pmIts now day four of my business trip to Orlando. The show is almost over, but looking back I feel that the workshops and tradeshow went really well. The videos that I created for the show have worked very perfectly, and the whole show seems to have taken a step forward in quality and enjoyment.
The theme of the event this year is Game Plans To Sell Our Brand, so everything has this sports/football look and feel. The main ballroom, which is huge, is split between tradeshow area, where the booths are setup, and the audience and stage area. The path in the middle is astroturf which leads the attendees past a goal post and into their seats. There are also bleachers setup behind the chairs, which were used as overflow seating.
The stage is setup like a locker room, with lockers, benches, and even a towel hamper with a bunch of our blue Eaton jerseys thrown artfully around the stage. Each of the major presentations have the feel of a coach's motivation speech. There are several posters around the room promoting the "Eaton Pep Rally In The Gym."
On Monday, day one of the workshops, all the Eaton employees wore blue team jerseys, with the number 06 on the front and back, and Eaton on the back between the shoulders. This had the great effect of making a tangible Eaton presence that day. Sadly that was the only day that we had this uniform, but it was a great way to start the week.
I've been spending most of my time here assisting the videographer, answering questions for the video editor, and photographing the tradeshow. Each year we hire a cameraman and editor team to produce a wrap-up video which is first shown at the end of the last day, and then used throughout the year to help us market and sell the show. I'm very happy how this years video turned out because he was able to increase the pace and energy conveyed and separate it from the previous videos.
I'm now sitting in the first part of the closing session. Our divisional president open, and followed by the corporate controller. I don't think the company president is speaking, but I know he'll be here tonight for the principles' dinner. This is when all of the distributor owners can get together with our senior leadership and talk directly about the business.
While all of the principles are dining, the rest of us slubs will be taking down the tradeshow. We have to pack all of the demonstration product, collapse the booths, and shrink pack everything on the pallets to ship back to our tradeshow management company.
I haven't had much time to do anything outside of the show. I had to get and and be here by 7:30am on Monday and Tuesday, so I went to be early the prior nights. But I didn't have to be to the show ballroom until 10am today, so I slept in until 8:30, which was very nice. I didn't get to be until 1am though because was out socializing with coworkers at several of the Gaylord's bars (I think there are at least 4 bars in this place, if not more).
I flying back at 1pm tomorrow afternoon. It will be very nice to see Joe again, before he flies out for his trip on Sunday.
