Surprise Birthday Cake
Oct. 7th, 2010 12:21 amAt tonight's NC Gaylaxians book discussion, I managed to surprise Joe with a birthday cake. He didn't notice until they were bringing the cake over. This made me very happy.
This afternoon I called ahead to Turtle Bread (where we have the book discussions, first Wednesday of each month) and inquired if they have whole cakes that I could use as a birthday cake for dinner. They said yes and offered to set one aside for me. Joe and I arrived there at about 6:45 for the 7:00 meeting and and told him to go ahead and sit down while I ordered our food. This gave me time to make sure they had the cake ready and to put the candles I bought earlier in the afternoon.
Turns at that at Turtle Bread you can also get table service from their sister Pizza resteraunt next door. So we ended up doing that since Turtlebread's available food offering was pretty slim that late in the day.
When the waitress came to take our pizza order at the table, she walks up and says "Is this the birthday party?" UGH! I nodded without verbally agreeing. I suspected that Joe wasn't paying attention and I was sitting on his blind side. I gave her our order, and then before she left she asked "And your getting a cake too, right?" Ugh again! I verbally said no, but I nodded and pointed to Joe. She winced and walked away.
A couple minutes later I followed her back to the Pizza side just to confirm she knew I was trying to be stealthy. She apologized and offered to bring the cake out, and to even light the candles.
At about 7:45 she and a couple other employees brought the cake out. The one problem they were having was that the candles wouldn't stay lit. The air conditioning in Turtle Bread is a little strong, and the candles were kind of crappy. Oh well, Joe was still well surprised.
