The top of my head is all fuzzy now. I have a 5 day shadow on my noggin.

A week ago today I went to my barber and had my hair buzzed off and my head shaved with a straight edge razor. The whole shaving process was kind of nice, though my head instantly felt colder. I never realized how much insulation my hair gives.

Click here to see my LJ scrapbook album pictures of my new look.

The album shows the three phases of my hair... full, mohawk, and bald. You can also see me and my fellow Atons as the Mr. Cleans.

I kind of liked the mohawk look. It's the best of both worlds. I had the skin AND the hair, at the same time. Sadly, working in the corporate world, the mohawk probably would endear me to management. At least with the bald look they can't really complain. Actually, I've gotten lots of nice comments from people here at work.

The initial reason that I shaved my head was because I, along with three fellow Atons, decided our cocktail party at the KC Pioneers run would have Mr. Clean theme. The Run's theme was "Down and Dirty," so we thought our theme would be a nice twist on the theme.

I've always been curious what I would look like bald, and just never had a good reason or excuse to go all the way. I've had my hair cut pretty short several times in the past couple of years. Before that I played a lot with having long hair... like down to the middle of my back kind of long hair. I like that also, but the amount of work required to take care of long hair just didn't make it worth it. Besides, I just ended up always tying it back, which wasn't any fun. Shaving it all off seemed like a natural continuation of my hair experimentation. Now the only thing I haven't done is color my hair different colors. I like the color of my hair, so I'll probably skip that.

On Saturday morning I re-shaved my head. The single blade shave I got from my barber wasn't as tight to the skin as I would have expected. When I shaved with a new triple blade razor on Saturday I barely felt any stubble. A nearly perfectly smooth head was a very nice feeling. Shaving my own head was easier than I expected. I simply lathered my scalp, the started to shave from the center outwards. It took a while to get everything as smooth as I wanted, but I managed not to cut myself, which was by biggest worry.

I received a lot of compliments from guys at the run about my head (pun intended). Before shaving my head I was afraid that I might have a pointy head, or maybe strange scars or an odd shaped head. Thankfully my noggin, sans hair, looks just fine.

Now I get to see how my hair grows back. If it's like my beard at all it should be back to something resembling normal within a month.

My brother and I would get all our hair cut off at the end of school while we were in grade school. The last time I did it a week before school was out I got teethmarks in my forehead during recess at school.

I'm used to thinking of you with hair. While I thought the photos looked nice I opt for the short and hirsuit as your "best view".

I agree the mohawk looks good on you. I say go for it; don't let The Man keep you down!

...don't let The Man keep you down!

But what if you like it when.... Oh, wait. You don't mean it in that sense...

Never mind.

Exactly. Feel free to allow a man to keep you down if you like that sort of thing.

I've been shaving my head at the drop of a hat for about 10 years, and it's had some "interesting" side effects.

For example, a friend of my was really concerned about my mental health shortly after I gave myself a clip-job (which is understandable, since I've been hospitalized for depression twice). She was convinced I was beginning another slide towards the dark-side of everything until her boyfriend reminded her, "David's lazy. He just does it so he doesn't have to comb his hair in the morning."

Then there was the time I got picked up (in Crate And Barrel, of all places) by a guy who asked me, "Just how long does it take to shave your head?"

I'll probably buzz it all off this weekend. It's amazing how well it hides my bald spot...

I think the Mr. Clean look rather suits you. And out of curiosity, what is "Aton"?

That looks like a really neat group. Sometime after I move up, I'd like to talk to you about Leather - I've read some things about it and it seems interesting, but I've never had a chance to get to know anyone who's involved in the Lifestyle.
