New video camera?

Here at work we're thinking about getting Canon's consumer level HDV camcorder, the Canon HV20. We don't have the budget for a really good camera, but I'm hoping that the HV20 will be good enough for use in corporate video projects. There are lots of great reviews for the camera out there.

I hoping to shoot in HD and then down convert the video to SD for editing. I suspect that this should give me fairly good quality.

I tried the Panasonic one once, and it was pretty decent. Price < $1000. Not sure if that's better than the Canon.
