I'm still trying to decide if I'm going to stop collecting comics or not. With Hot Comics discontinuing their subscriber discount program, I'm not sure if I'm willing to purchase comics without that 15% discount.

In an effort to make this decision, I examined my 2007 statements to see how much I spent on comics in a years time. The total amount was $1869.27. Ouch. And that's WITH the 15% discount. It would have been $2149.66 without the discount.

I could go to a different comic shop, but I expect that the extra gas spent driving might outweigh the savings of their discount.

DreamHaven and Source both have 10% off cards. Not the same, but better.

If I were you, I'd show your statements to the HC people, and say that you're thinking of stopping collecting altogether. Ask them if they'd rather have $1869.27 per year or $0.00 per year.

Frankly, I have no idea how most brick-and-mortar comics shops with any significant discount can stay in business -- it's clear that discount competition is a basic reason that service is so miserable at most shops, and the decor so ugly and uninviting, with margins so small -- who can afford to pay anyone or decorate?!

One of the best shops I've ever used, Comix Experience in San Francisco, does no direct discounts at all - but allows regular customers to redeem receipts for 10% of their value on the next purchase. In exchange, they manage to have a pretty decent-looking store with reasonably informed and somewhat social staff.

(Then again, Zeus Comics in Dallas, a totally beautiful store staffed by wunderkinder, does a 15% pull discount too -- but they also do a significant toy business.)

That's what Big Brain Comics in downtown Minneapolis does. You save your receipts, and when you have $100 worth, you get $10 in "Big Brain Bucks".

Of course, Michael (owner of Big Brain) used to work for Brian at Comix Experience. :)

There was a time when I did not have easy access to a comic store and I discovered Westfield Comics mail order system. Since then, I have preordered my comics with them and have enjoyed substantial discounts. I do have to give up the personal interaction with the comics staff, but I do enjoy the convenience. Check them out at www.westfieldcomics.com

Curious how many books a months do you by? I've cut down a lot. There is a website where you can download comics for free, I do it to check out books to see if I like them.
