My family films archive project is coming along very well. Last week I finished transferring the fifty-four Super 8 films to miniDV tape, and then digitizing all of those into my computer. I digitized each tape as one long file, and then went through a cut up the longer videos into shorter sequences. Before I went to bed last night I setup a job to export all of the sequences as stand alone Quicktime files. This will be used to convert the videos for possible iPhone use. This morning I setup another job to export each sequence as MPEG2 files to use on the DVD. Tonight I want to start creating the DVD interface and figuring out how I want to organize the videos. It probably just makes sense to put them all in chronological order, but I'm playing with other ideas.

I'm also thinking about how I may want to edit these together to create a nice 30 minute loop to play at my parents fiftieth wedding anniversary in September. It was suggested that we just play all of the unedited videos, but that would take after three and a half hours to play. A nice loop will let people see it and move on without fear of missing something.

My one disappointment was that the films start right *after* my Grandpa Bertke died, so I didn't get a chance to see him in motion. The first films are from my parent's 1965 trip to the World Fair with my Granda Bertke. She was along because her husband had recently died. However, I was very happy to see footage of my Grandma  Bertke and my Grandpa and Grandma Penk, and of the old Lake of the Ozarks cabin that our family used to have.

At the end of August we're having a Bertke family reunion for the first time. Of course, when I say Bertke family, I really just mean the families of my Dad and Uncle. We're renting a couple houses in the Ozarks and spending a week there. While watching the films I realized that the ten year anniversary of my Grandma Bertke's death will be in just a couple weeks, right before the reunion. I think she would have really liked these films and the fact that her children and their families are still getting together.
