Muscle Milk

Last week I finally bit the bullet and bought some protein powder. The trainer I've been consulting with recommended this months ago, but for some reason I was intimidated the thought of taking protein supplements. I think I was fearing the weightlifter stereotype.

Now, after using CytoSport's Muscle Milk for a week and a half, I really wish I'd been using this stuff since last summer!

I'm feeling so much better in the days following my workouts. Before the supplement, my muscles would really ache for two or three days after. Now I'm not feeling much in the way of aches at all. It's like I'm finally giving my body what it needs to rebuild the muscles, so it's not hurting as much.

Usually, after my Wednesday leg routines, I'm limping a bit on Thursday and Friday. This week I even pushed myself hard on my leg exercises, but I'm walking just fine now.

I don't know if my body would respond this way to all protein supplements, or if its really this specific product that's helping me. CytoSport is really pushing their "EvoPro" type of proteins. One thing that strikes me as slightly gross in this product's marketing is all the comparisons to mother's milk. Yeah, I realize that its probably a great thing... but having never been raised on mother's milk (adopted, so bottle fed), I have no personal connection to mother's milk being a good thing. Besides... mother's milk equals breasts, and being a gay man that's very scary! (JUST KIDDING!). Still, the product is great, so I'll get past my uncomfortableness with the references to mother's milk.

Beyond the benefit to my body... this stuff actually tastes okay! I've been drinking this stuff as a shake (2 scoops with 12 oz. of water) twice a day, after working out and before bed. I tried it last night with skim milk instead of water, but it didn't taste as good, so I'll go back to water.

So far I've just been using the Chocolate flavored shake, but it looks like they have a lot of flavors out there. I bought my first container at the gym, but I think I can find cheaper prices online.

I keep accidentally typing the company name as CryptoSport... which sounds like something [livejournal.com profile] minnehaha would play.

i think any protein powder works. i've been eating soy or rice protein powder from the co-op with smoothies after excercise sometimes and it seems to be good. also you can just up your protein intake via food too. eating lots of meat, fish, tofu, tempeh, miso, nut butters, fake meat, soy milk, milk, eggs is good.

i beliive if you eat more it is probably better than eating proteing powder because how could someone 'formulate' something that is better than food? (that would be too sci-fi and cool so it must not be true) :)

I'm scratching my head over the mother's milk thing. I would think that even for a STRAIGHT man, that is not a favorable comparison.

Comparing oneself to a baby is not favorable, and the other thing that comes to mind is too kinky to put into print in a polite magazine.

Keep in mind that all the muscle you build up has to be maintained or it goes soft and fatty.

Yep. I'm trying to make a lifestyle change, to include exercise as part of my daily routine. I've done pretty well since last May.

You want to watch the carbs in the shake; one of the "balanced" shakes K was using was loaded with simple carbs and it made his triglycerides spike. He switched to IsoPure and the problem went away.

Muscle Milk is pretty good. It has some Good Fats (EFAs) along with the protein, which is something you need as well for muscle recovery.

It would certainly be possible to eat unprocessed foods instead, but it is not very practical -- time consuming both to prepare and to eat by comparison with a shake.

Good point about the time element of food vs. shake.

Hey... I should get you and my husband [livejournal.com profile] rvrjoe775 in contact with each other to talk about your upcoming cruise. I don't think he knows anyone on the cruise.
