Attending 2081 panel now. This is a proposed movie remake... Errr... Re-invisioning for the the 2001 40th anniversary. Sony bought the MGM properties, and is looking to launch a new movie series, hopefully a trillogy.
They are planning to include the original bone that was thrown in the original movie.
Manu "Day" Kumar is playing the Dave Bowman analog, the lead character.
HAL will be changed... They are referring to it as the HAL droid, though that's not the official name.
There is a rep her from Sony, Austin Melcher. The writer Mark Alexander, Producer Jean Kerr, and actor Manu "Day" Kumar. No director is signed yet.
Hmm... This is feeling more and more like a joke panel. They just through out Michael Bay as a potential director.
They were talking about music... And the Sony rep said they would use many Sony artists, releasing sound track and an "inspired by" album. Then Jean, the producer, suggested Yanni. The Sony rep quickly pointed out that Yanni is not a Sony artist.
I'm pretty sure that I'm watching a cute little bit of improv theater.
They just had an argument about location shooting. The Sony rep said they were looking at Tunishia (sp?), the the producer exploded with a load "WHAT! You told me we were shooting in the US, and mainly in the LA area."
Then they started going over Manu's credits... A sherpa in the English Patient, a patient in ER.
The "moderator" of the panel is playing hostile.
Of coarse this will be released in 3D IMAX. The 3D will be used for HAL's p.o.v.
They are going to have a web contest to name the lead character... Manu's character.
They keep getting phone calls and answering them. How Hollywood.
Manu said he'll be training with NASA.
Some one asked about the aliens... and Jean blurted out "they are so cute!" and quickly covered her mouth.
I think most of the audience is still taking this seriously.
Yep, it's a joke. Funny panel. They are now explaining who they are and how much fun they just had.
