Follow up to the Subway waste issue.

Got a call back from the local Subway Human Resources person who told me that it is state law that requires Subway to use the plastic bags.

I told her I was disappointed to hear that. I then asked her if they would consider alternatives, such as providing a recycling receptical in the store instead of only offering the trash can. In her best snide HR voice, she told me she would pass along the comment.

Next time you eat at Subway, ask them to not give you a bag. If they insist, then tell them you will have lunch somewhere else that doesn't force unnneccesary waste on you.

(Hey... anyone know of a person I can talk to at the MN Health Department? I want to ask them why they require this, and if their are any alternatives besides the bags.)

Odd. I *know* that Milio's in Minneapolis and a small deli in St Louis Park both wrap their subs in paper and then put them in a PAPER bag. In fact at Milios, they hand you the sandwiches and there is a pile of PAPER bags sitting on the counter for you to bag it *if* you wish.

Guess everyone but Subway is breaking a state law.

So don't eat there anymore. Or take the bags home and recycle them.

Both very good suggestions.

Jimmy Johns uses paper wrapping.

And the subs are better, IMHO.

"...who told me that it is state law that requires Subway to use the plastic bags."

That is complete bullshit.

Ask them for a copy of the law.

I had a conversation with another women in local Subway management office last week. Turns out the health code issue is something about needing to maintain the food preparation side free of outside contact. Somehow by putting the food in the plastic bag and handing that over the counter prevents cross contamination. Other restaurants do this by putting the prepared food in a basket and handing that over.

I fail to see why the extra wrapping of paper they already use doesn't fill this requirement.

I asked her who their contact is at the MN Health Department, but she wouldn't provide me with a name. I looked up the Health Department website, but with the current state budget crisis, they are closed. I follow up on this after the state returns to normal. In the mean time, I'll just eat somewhere else.

I've also been trying to find out if the plastic bags are bio-degradable or not. The Subway person didn't know, and I haven't found any good results to Google searches.
